Pricing

It is my aim to make my gardening as affordable as possible whilst not compromising on service, sustainability and my own ability to live. A living wage based on a four day week enables me to sustain both my mental and physical health, allowing me to be able to provide my gardening services whilst also providing time and space for me to develop my skills and knowledge through reading and my work in community gardens and growing spaces.

This is very much the ethos behind the Living Gardeners Collective. Living gardens by living people for a living wage.

Price increase 2026

Every October I calculate what my new rate of pay will be in the new year (from 1st January onwards). The new ‘London Living Wage’ has been announced today on 22nd October 2025 and the following price change reflects this.

From 1st January 2026, my rate for gardening will be:

£35 per hour.

I have been developing my approach to this over the past 3 or so years now, testing things out, seeing what works for me and my clients in terms of pricing, structure, etc. Each year I have tweaked the calculations a bit to better reflect the work that I put in outside of peoples gardens such as communications, invoicing, researching, caring for tools, my bike, my trailer. There is also the cost of insurance, my website, any other communications materials or time spent curating these. This has been a slow process of learning and realising the nature of the work, how long it takes to do and learning to place proper value on it.

This year I am going back to a standard, single hourly rate. This comes after testing a slightly higher rate for the first two hours which ultimately became confusing and still didn’t reflect additional costs such as time spent communicating or the replacement/purchase of new tools. There will still be a minimum booking of 2 hours.

I have found it difficult at times to get my head around charging prices that I myself don’t feel like I could afford. Partly this is the mixed nature of my work - working in the voluntary sector does not pay well and this work most definitely subsidises that. With that in mind, I am grateful to everyone who has hired me to work in their gardens over the past years. You have enabled me to do the work that I feel most passionately about, which is actively working in and sharing a passion for growing, wildlife and existing more harmoniously with people. Thank you for that.

Current rate

My current standard rate for maintenance gardening is shown in the table below. There is a minimum 2 hours charge per gardening session (this may vary based on location). This includes time spent offloading tools and bringing them into your garden and loading tools back onto my trailer at the end of a session.

For one-off planting, consultation, help with plant sourcing, design, carpentry work, etc. I will quote on a case by case basis.

This rate is based on the Living Wage Foundation’s London Living Wage and is adjusted to satisfy a four day working week as well as including time for admin, tool maintenance and general business costs such as insurance, marketing and the occasional purchase or replacement of tools.

*I aim to increase my rate annually in line with increases of the London Living Wage by the Living Wage Foundation. This tends to be announced in the Autumn. I aim to inform clients of the price increase at this time with changes to my hourly charge being implemented from 1st January each year. Of course, there are various factors that may mean that I have to change my pricing at other times of the year.

How I take payments

My preferred payment method is via bank transfer. Bank details are provided at the bottom of invoices, which are sent after a gardening session or when the work has been completed.

If you’d prefer not to pay by bank transfer, I am able to accept cash payments. Please do ask if you’d like a copy of your invoice if paying by cash.

Pay it forward.

One of the things I would love to be able to do is to offer gardening at a cheaper rate to those who cannot afford my rate. This does, however, rely on those who can afford to pay a little more to subsidise and make a cheaper rate possible. If you are able to pay more please do let me know. I keep this money in a separate pot in my account along with a record of all extra funds that I receive and offer this to any client who says that they require the subsidy.
